Apparently GM is bound and dinremeted to get some use out of that ugly Opel design.I also found that GM is apparently run by non-business types. Tesla’s Elon Musk has made many tatements that clearly show that he understands the economics and proper busienss model for electrics at this stage of battery costs : only high end EVs really make sense, because anything down close to $30K will be essentially a niche, second or commuter-onlycar due to its reduced range and slower recharge capabilities. Like the Volt, who, to judge by positive blogger comments, has as its customer base folks who’s only attraction to the car seems to be the fact that it mostly uses electricity. And those folks are definitely NOT car guys, or mechanically inclined. Instead of taking GM’s bizarre path,Tesla focuses on building a great car, but one that just happens to be electric. Their Model S, judging by the videos of their car’s features and engineering, is superior to anything GM has on the market, period. It alsocompetes very well against BMW and Mercedes highend sedans. It’s actually better than they are, in every conceivable fashion, and can do trips. Musk clearly understands that the price level for a sucessful EV is at the high end, not the low end. Of course, at the outset, GM promised a Volt that would cost “under $30K,”missing the final mark by an astounding 50%, which makes me wonder if GM has had any experience in developing cars. The brainless stock analysts are skeptical about Tesla’s ability to compete against those “established, professional automakers,” making me wonder which automakers they are referring to. Plug-in hybrid technology is merely an attempt to solve the problem of high battery costs. No engineer would otherwise ever havetried to stitch together two such disparate drivetrains and create such a mechanical monster.Hybrids have the worst of both worldsand seem closer to Rube Goldberg machines thananything else. They are a bridge technology atbest and are intrinsically the most inefficient way one could conceivably build an automobile. When battery prices drop another 50%, no one will ever build another plug-in hybrid, since at that point they become the high cost alternative. A pure electric with 160 miles of range and fast recharging capability (which already exists) is good enough to handle all local driving and occasional trips. Such a battery pack would cost around $10K after that 50% price drop.Subtract from that $10K the cost of the engine, transmission, exhaust system, fuel system, etc that the EV doesn’t need andthe ICE cost advantage disappears, even for intial costs. The price of simply the engine alone for the new Corvette is quoted at more than $14K.
